About the mahi
The Palliative Medicine Doctor will provide consultative specialist palliative care to hospice patients and their family and whānau. You will join our North Shore multidisciplinary team who deliver end of life care that promotes quality of life. You’ll enjoy working both in the community and in our completely redeveloped, state of the art inpatient unit.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Manage complex cases and follow-up
- Support and collaborate with GPs, Aged Residential Care and other specialist providers
- Educate colleagues and external stakeholders and advocate for hospice care
- Contribute to best practice processes improvement and governance
- Coach and mentor other medical staff
- Be active with research and develop and lead new projects
About you | Mōhou ake
You have expert knowledge in palliative care gained in either a hospice or hospital setting. You understand the unpredictable demands of palliative care and you’re ready to adapt to them. An advocate for quality end of life care, you engender trust and respect and demonstrate cultural awareness with sound knowledge of Tikanga Māori.
You will demonstrate:
- Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (or equivalent)
- Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate
- Trained in principles of evidence-based medicine
- A collaborative and compassionate working style
- An interest in supervising and mentoring staff and your own professional development

Harbour Hospice is one of the largest hospices in Aotearoa New Zealand and has been caring for tūroro (patients) and their family and whānau for almost 40 years. Every day we care for close to 400 people across the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Warkworth/Wellsford regions, supporting them at home, in one of our two inpatient units, or in community programmes offered at each of our three sites.
Our bespoke services given free of charge, include medical care, spiritual, psychological and social support, physio, occupational and complementary therapy, social activities and more.
Where possible our people work with a hybrid working model in order to facilitate and maximise our service delivery options.
