About the role:

About you:

We’re looking for a special type of person who has the life skills and counselling experience to visit the home of a patient and to talk with them about the issues they are facing and how to deal with the multitude of emotions, thoughts and feelings they are going through.

From a counselling perspective the role on our in-patient unit is somewhat different to the “norm”. Think cold-calling for Counsellors, there is no appointment system on an IPU. As a Counsellor you only get one chance to make a first impression and that is where your experience as a Counsellor practising in Grief & Loss and ideally EOL Diagnosis, palliative care really makes a difference to our patients and their families.

Our team run support groups for patients, carers and their families and this role will be involved in the planning and facilitation of some of these.  There is a requirement to support internal training of staff in relevant areas.

What are we looking for from you?

  • Counselling degree or post graduate certificate or diploma
  • Current NZAC annual practicing certificate
  • Cultural competence
  • Flexibility to work collaboratively
  • Ability to draw on evidence-based practice and literature
  • Experience or interest in working within a Narrative and Collaborative therapies framework

Both our community-based & in-patient unit Counsellors play a key part in building trust and engagement with the Team at Hospice. From a Counselling perspective this is your opportunity to help our patients live every moment in whatever way is important to them.
