Family Support Team Leader and IPU Counsellor

Harbour Hospice is the specialist, palliative care provider for families living in the Hibiscus Coast, North Shore and Warkworth / Wellsford communities. We provide compassionate, free care working primarily with patients, families and carers in their homes and within our three hospice sites. Our bespoke services offer a holistic approach to care and include medical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural support, physiotherapy, social activities and more, with an emphasis on helping people live every moment in whatever way is important to them.

Job summary:

We are looking for an experienced counsellor, psychologist or psychotherapist with team leader experience who embodies our values of compassionate, inclusive and professional. 

This role provides counselling support to patients, carers and families in our 6-bed inpatient unit as well as leading and managing the Family Support team at our Hospice on the Hibiscus Coast.

Our Family Support team offers practical and emotional support to patients, families, whānau and carers, including children and young people, learning to cope with uncertainty, loss and grief. Our multi-disciplinary team (MDT) work closely together to provide a range of services to those living with a life limiting condition.  

This is a part time role working between 24-28 hours per week, with at least 12 hours a week allocated to team leadership and management.

About the role:

We’re looking for an experienced team leader who can manage the Family Support function and develop and inspire a team of experienced people working across social work, cultural support, counselling, complementary therapy and spiritual carer.  This role will manage the family support services, liaising with community services and groups and will work within an MDT approach to provide counselling for patients, carers and families in our in-patient unit.

What are we looking for from you?

  • Counselling degree or post graduate certificate or diploma
  • Current NZAC annual practicing certificate
  • Cultural competence 
  • Knowledge of Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and biculturalism
  • Flexibility to work collaboratively
  • Proven leadership and people management skills
  • Ability to draw on evidence-based practice and literature
  • Broad based experience and knowledge of counselling and the ability to develop resources and information
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in working with families facing loss
  • Knowledge of quality improvement processes and principles
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate and manage change
  • Ability to work autonomously whilst working as part of the MDT
  • Ability to manage budgets
